Just wondering how you all feel about that baby talking furry red thing named Elmo. Personally I can't stand him. I hate that he takes up all of the time on S Street. He is over commercialized and annoying. Sorry if ya love 'em, in my opinion you can have 'em.

Tue, April 17, 2007 - 3:33 PMI think he is hated by adults instinctively for two reasons, and the same ones that hate(d) Barney, teletubbies, etc. hate for the same reasons.
I think as adults the insipid cuteness is hard to take anyway, no matter how we talk to our pets. So that's sort of number one, but the deeper side to it is that it is a portrayal of innocence that rings false in a world we know to be corrupt. The innocent smiling puppet becomes the villian when he mocks our pain with his simplistic take on a world we see with such cynicism.
Sesame Street logic of 'share, be nice, help others' gets contradicted early on, when our grade school society gives way to the middle school society of 'everyone for yourself' and 'different = bad'. Follow this up with a world where sharing and niceness can get you taken advantage of, or even killed, and Da Street is all a bunch of furry crapola.
OK, maybe I'm projecting. What do you all think?

Wed, April 18, 2007 - 7:32 PMI understand where you are coming from on both points. For me it is really the amount of time we must spend with this monster. I am for equal time for all monsters. I don't think I would like oscar if we had to sit through oscar's world for 18 mins. each episode. I think that no monster, critter, creature, thing, or person should absorb so much time on the show. And thewhole marketing thing. Elmo this, Elmo that, Holy Crap!!!! By the way do you think they sell Elmo's holy crap??? :) -

but I too find the Elmo TOYS a bit annoying :-/
for me it's just that... the toys, and the commercials for the toys are what annoy the heck out of me.
